JetBlue expands New York presence with potential benefits for Aruba

NEW YORK – JetBlue Airways has won a bankruptcy auction to acquire Spirit Airlines' flight slots at New York's LaGuardia Airport for $58.5 million, while also announcing plans to relocate all of its operations to the historic Marine Air Terminal (Terminal A).

JetBlue outbid Frontier Airlines by $1 million to secure 22 flight slots, including 12 daily departures and 10 arrivals. The acquisition could support up to 12 additional daily round-trip flights once integrated into the airline's network.

The transaction is still subject to approval by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). JetBlue expects to begin using the new slots in 2027.

The airline will also move its LaGuardia operations from Terminal B to the iconic Art Deco-style Marine Air Terminal, formerly occupied by Spirit Airlines before the carrier ceased operations.

ARUBA BENEFITS?

For Aruba, the expansion could strengthen JetBlue's network and improve connectivity through New York. Although no additional Aruba flights have been announced, the increased capacity at LaGuardia may create new opportunities for travelers flying between Aruba and the New York metropolitan area or connecting to other U.S. destinations.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said the move will help reduce congestion at the airport's larger terminals while ensuring continued use of the historic Marine Air Terminal.
