U.S. strikes tanker with Curacao flag bound for Iran
WASHINGTON – The United States says it has struck an oil tanker sailing under the Curaçao flag while it was heading toward Iran's Kharg Island. According to U.S. Central Command (Centcom), the unloaded tanker ignored repeated warnings and attempted to breach the U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports and coastal waters.
Centcom said the tanker Belma was sailing in international waters toward Kharg Island, one of Iran's main oil export terminals. A U.S. military aircraft reportedly fired Hellfire missiles at the vessel's funnel, disabling the ship and preventing it from continuing its voyage to Iran.
The U.S. resumed its maritime blockade of vessels traveling to and from Iranian ports on Tuesday. Centcom said two commercial ships altered course during the first 24 hours of the operation after receiving warnings.
The command also released video footage on X that it says shows the strike. Iranian authorities had not officially responded to the incident at the time of publication.
