Court sentences former MP Howell to 23 months in prison for embezzlement

ORANJESTAD – The Joint Court of Justice has found former Member of Parliament Alan Howell guilty of embezzlement and forgery.

The Court sentenced Howell to 23 months in prison, of which six months are suspended, with a three-year probation period. He was also ordered to pay a fine of AWG 35,000.

In addition, the AWG 15,000 that had previously been seized will remain confiscated.

The original sentence imposed by the Court of First Instance was 24 months, but the Court of Appeal reduced the prison term by one month.

Following the ruling, Howell announced that he intends to appeal the decision to the Supreme Court of the Netherlands (cassation).
