WILLEMSTAD — Starlink has received the green light to enter Curaçao’s telecommunications market after the official concession was signed on Wednesday. Based on earlier information, the satellite internet service could become operational within a maximum of 30 days.
Minister Charles Cooper said Starlink’s arrival could bring more competition and more choice for consumers. The SpaceX-owned company will have to comply with the same local laws and regulations as other telecom providers, including taxes, import duties and legal obligations.
Possible uses of Starlink for disaster communications, education, healthcare and public Wi-Fi in central Willemstad were also discussed.
According to Cooper, Starlink sees Curaçao as a strategic location for infrastructure and data-centre development, although the company’s concrete plans are not yet known.
