More than 170 students debate issues affecting Aruba and the Kingdom
ORANJESTAD — More than 170 students from Colegio Arubano and Colegio Nigel Matthew participated in a special Prinsjesdag event organized by the Representation of the Netherlands in Aruba (VNO) at Cas di Cultura’s temporary location in Paseo Herencia.
The students received explanations about the Speech from the Throne, the Dutch budget memorandum and the national budget, as well as how political decisions in the Netherlands can affect Aruba and the other countries within the Kingdom. They also learned how Aruba’s budget is prepared and Parliament’s role in approving it.
The students then debated current social and political issues in groups. They were required to defend assigned positions, even when these did not reflect their personal opinions.
A jury led by former Governor Fredis Refunjol evaluated the debates. VNO and the jury praised the students for their active and enthusiastic participation.
