US outage cancels three flights between Newark and Aruba
ORANJESTAD — The major air traffic control telecommunications failure in the northeastern United States also affected flights between Newark and Aruba.
According to Queen Beatrix International Airport’s flight information, two United Airlines flights from Newark to Aruba — UA1040 and UA1042 — were cancelled. Flight UA1039 from Aruba to Newark was also cancelled, while UA1043 to Newark was postponed from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Flights connecting Aruba with New York JFK and Boston were not cancelled. JetBlue flight B62173 from Boston, JetBlue B6057 and Delta DL613 from JFK all arrived in Aruba ahead of schedule. The return flights to Boston and JFK also departed close to their scheduled times.
The disruption began with the failure of a primary circuit at an air traffic control facility in Philadelphia. When the system attempted to switch to its backup connection, officials discovered that an Amtrak construction crew had accidentally severed the fiber-optic cable.
The FAA temporarily halted traffic at Philadelphia, Newark, JFK, LaGuardia and Boston Logan. More than 5,600 flights were delayed or cancelled and over 100 aircraft were diverted.
Passengers travelling between Aruba and the United States are advised to check their flight status directly with their airline before heading to the airport.
