Tour Operators Uni calls for urgent controls after fatal UTV accident

ORANJESTAD — Tour Operators Uni has expressed its condolences following the fatal UTV accident near Grapefield on Sunday afternoon that claimed the life of a young Dutch woman. According to the organization, several tour guides witnessed the accident.

Tour Operators Uni stresses that, based on the information available, the vehicle was not part of an organized tour. The group says organized tours normally operate with licensed guides, registered vehicles and established routes.

According to information received from colleagues at the scene, the driver reportedly attempted a maneuver with the UTV before the crash. The organization says it strongly condemns high-speed driving, drifting and “donuts” involving UTVs.

“High speed, drifting or donuts with any type of vehicle, especially UTVs, are practices we condemn, and this is exactly why we are calling for stronger controls in our sector,” Tour Operators Uni stated.

The organization says the sector has for some time raised concerns about UTVs and ATVs that, in its view, operate without complying with all applicable rules and use routes along Aruba’s north coast.

Tour Operators Uni says the current dialogue between government, the sector and other stakeholders is essential, but must be followed by concrete action and effective enforcement to help prevent further accidents.

The organization remains available to authorities with any information that may assist the investigation and, on behalf of local operators and guides, extended condolences to the victim’s family and friends.
