Government sets up task force to tackle Aruba’s waste problem

ORANJESTAD — Justice, Integrity, Public Transport and Energy Minister Arthur Dowers has officially established a task force to address Aruba’s long-standing waste problem.

The group, active since September 1, is tasked with developing concrete proposals for a more sustainable, coordinated and responsible waste-management system.

Its priorities include preventing and enforcing laws against illegal dumping, improving cleanup and recycling, processing organic waste, collecting relevant data and finding a sustainable way to finance waste management.

The task force will also assess whether existing laws should be amended or new legislation is needed.

Representatives from several ministries, government departments and organizations are participating, including environmental, infrastructure and waste-management agencies.

The ultimate goal is to move Aruba from a fragmented approach to a more structural and coordinated waste-management system.
