Aruba explores new trade route for meat imports from Dominican Republic

ORANJESTAD — Minister of Finance, Economic Affairs and the Primary Sector Geoffrey Wever has opened talks in Santo Domingo to explore a new trade route between Aruba and the Dominican Republic, with meat imports among the first concrete opportunities being considered.

During a meeting with ProDominicana at HUB Cámara Santo Domingo 2026, discussions focused on how Aruban importers could purchase meat from approved and certified Dominican companies that meet Aruba’s sanitary and veterinary requirements.

Logistics are a key issue. For the route to be competitive and sustainable, there must be enough volume to fill containers regularly. The government is therefore also exploring the involvement of more Aruban importers and the possibility of consolidating meat with other Dominican products in the same trade flow.

Wever said the goal is not simply to find a new supplier, but to create a practical, competitive and reliable commercial route. The parties also discussed a possible Memorandum of Understanding to structure cooperation and define the next steps.

No final agreement on meat imports has been signed. Talks will continue through commercial contacts, technical coordination and an assessment of the conditions needed to diversify Aruba’s supply sources and reduce dependence on a limited number of markets.
