ORANJESTAD — SETAR employees’ union STT says it has reached an impasse with the Government of Aruba over the position of SETAR director, as uncertainty grows over the succession of current managing director Roland Croes.
According to a message from the STT board, several letters and communications have gone back and forth between the union and the Government, but no agreement has yet been reached. Because of the situation, the union called a general staff meeting for today at 2:30 p.m. at SETAR Sero Blanco and indicated that its next step will depend on the outcome of that meeting.
The dispute carries added weight because the future of SETAR’s leadership was already a public issue. In February of this year, Roland Croes said on Noticiacla LIVE that his plan was to remain as managing director for another two years after reaching retirement age, but that any extension depended, among other things, on approval from the Government as sole shareholder, together with consideration by the Supervisory Board. At the time, Croes said all indications pointed to the possibility of him staying on for another two years.
Croes is one of the longest-serving executives to have led a state-owned company in Aruba. He became managing director of SETAR in 2003 and, according to information published by Noticiacla, has accumulated 23 years in the position and 36 years with the company.
The current situation, however, suggests that the process concerning either continuity or replacement in the position has apparently not yet resulted in a solution supported by all parties. STT did not specify in its message exactly what the main point of disagreement with the Government is, nor who the candidate or profile is that has caused the impasse.
For now, what is clear is that the union considers the issue serious enough to gather its members and prepare a next step.
Noticiacla is following the case and seeking further clarification from STT, the Government and SETAR regarding the process for the company’s future leadership.
