Eight laws approved during 2025-2026 parliamentary year

ORANJESTAD — Aruba’s Parliament approved eight draft national ordinances during the 2025-2026 parliamentary year, while the Government submitted nine legislative proposals and members of Parliament introduced four initiatives of their own.

According to the official overview, 13 legislative proposals were submitted during the period: nine by the Government and four parliamentary initiatives. Eight were approved.

Among the laws approved were the establishment of the General Investment and Development Fund, DOW’s 2026 budget and an amendment to the National Ordinance on Road Traffic and the Criminal Code to impose tougher penalties for reckless driving.

Parliament also approved legislation related to the reorganization of ministries following the installation of a new cabinet, an amendment to the 2025 Budget, and the budgets of the Advisory Council, Parliament and the General Audit Chamber.

Another figure that stands out is the number of amendments: only three were submitted during the entire period. One was approved and two were rejected.

The figures provide a concrete picture of the legislative side of parliamentary work.

With the 2027 Budget already submitted to Parliament and several legislative proposals still pending, the next parliamentary year is likely to put greater pressure on Parliament to process legislation, rather than focus solely on political debate.
