Five dead after Amazon cargo plane overruns runway in Miami
MIAMI — A Boeing 767 cargo aircraft operating for Amazon overran the runway after landing at Miami International Airport and ended up on a nearby road, where it struck several vehicles.
Miami-Dade fire officials said five people were killed and five others were injured, three of them seriously. It is not yet clear whether those killed were aboard the aircraft or in the vehicles.
The plane had arrived in Miami from San Juan, Puerto Rico. According to the FAA, it ran off the end of the runway, crossed a road near the airport and came to rest in a grassy area.
Rescue efforts were complicated because one of the aircraft’s engines continued running. Firefighters could only approach the plane after stopping the engine with water. More than 60 firefighters responded to the incident.
The cause of the runway overrun is not yet known. The FAA will investigate. Runways and taxiways were temporarily closed, but the airport has since begun restoring flight operations. Passengers are being advised to check their flight status directly with their airline.
