Belgium ends U.S. World Cup run

SEATTLE – Belgium defeated the United States 4-1 on Monday night to advance to the World Cup quarterfinals, ending the Americans' tournament.

Charles De Ketelaere gave Belgium an early lead before Malik Tillman equalized for the U.S. midway through the first half. The tie lasted only a few minutes as De Ketelaere restored Belgium's advantage with his second goal.

Hans Vanaken extended Belgium's lead in the second half, while the U.S. struggled to create scoring chances. American captain Christian Pulisic also left the match with an injury.

Belgium sealed the victory with a late fourth goal and will now face Spain in the quarterfinals on Friday in Inglewood, California.

The defeat ends the United States' best World Cup run since 2002, when the team also fell short of reaching the semifinals.
