ORANJESTAD – SETAR is informing its customers of important changes affecting roaming services in the United States. As part of the global transition to newer mobile technologies, the last U.S. mobile operator still using 2G technology will shut down its network in August 2026.
Once the shutdown is complete, voice calls and SMS messages while roaming will rely entirely on Voice over LTE (VoLTE) across 4G and 5G networks.
SETAR has already activated VoLTE Roaming with T-Mobile USA, ensuring that customers can continue making voice calls and sending SMS messages while roaming in the United States, even after the 2G network is retired.
To use VoLTE Roaming in the United States, customers must have a VoLTE-ready SIM card and a smartphone with VoLTE enabled. In recent years, many SETAR customers have already upgraded to VoLTE-compatible SIM cards and are using VoLTE services locally with compatible devices.
SETAR encourages customers planning to travel to the United States, particularly during the vacation season, to verify that both their smartphone and SIM card are compatible before purchasing a Roaming Bundle including Voice for the United States. Customers who need to upgrade their SIM card can visit any SETAR Teleshop.
The retirement of 2G and 3G technology is part of a worldwide transition to more advanced mobile networks, including 4G and 5G. As a result, similar roaming service changes are expected in other destinations as mobile operators continue modernizing their networks.
SETAR will continue to closely monitor these developments and work with mobile operators in the United States and other countries to expand VoLTE Roaming services in the near future.
