ORANJESTAD - Today the covenant on the establishment of the Unit for Trafficking in Human Beings and Smuggling in Oranjestad was signed by the Minister of Justice, Security and Integration, the Attorney General of Aruba, the Chief of Police and the Brigade Commander of the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee. The establishment of this special investigation team is part of the Aruban Integral Action Plan for combating trafficking in human beings and human smuggling for the period 2018-2022, which was also officially launched today by the Minister of Justice, Security and Integration. The Human Trafficking and Smuggling Unit (UMM) is led by a public prosecutor and was established in 2017 as an operational investigation unit. Both the Public Prosecution Service and the Police Corps Aruba and the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee are part of it. The UMM focuses on the criminal law approach to trafficking in human beings and human smuggling and has (among other things) the purpose, the detection and prosecution of perpetrators, the rolling up of criminal organizations and the pursuit of illegal money flows. The UMM also has the task to gather and share information about human trafficking and human smuggling. In addition, the UMM focuses on taking away criminal property in human trafficking and human smuggling. This involves working with the Packaging Team.
